Screening the film

We are thrilled to work with museums, universities, and fans of Folk Art to do customized screenings of the film, which we deem preview screenings at this time. Please contact us to get started!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SCREENING THE PARADISE GARDEN DOCUMENTARY

When you host a preview screening, you are organizing the event and we ask that it is coordinated and promoted to maximize the audience’s experience with our film. It’s your event, so it’s up to you to choose the date, time, venue, partners, team and other details, once we have granted you a license.

Howard Finster used recycled objects and we encourage that you use recycled materials and good old fashioned handwritten notes to promote the screening in an homage to his work.   We just ask that you try minimize environmental waste, recycle, reuse, as Howard would approve.

While some people do all the organizing themselves, we recommend putting a team together to help with planning, promotion, and support needed to host a great event.   We recommend having four volunteers to distribute materials, facilitate a discussion, as well as collect ballots.   You can consider sponsoring the event or offering food and drinks, which helps to get a bigger audience.

What’s in our screening kit?

  • two copies of the DVD
  • a license to show the film publicly
  • a discussion guide
  • custom press material to promote your event
  • our promotion of your screening through our website and inclusion in our social marketing.

Do we charge for screening?

We only charge the costs that we incur to allow the material to be screened in public at this time, terms could change based on the distribution of this project, but we will work to honor any agreed upon screenings.

How should I handle ticket sales?

Some movie theaters and event spaces will have their own policy/box office for ticket sales.

Volunteers have indicated to us that EventBrite provides a guest list printout to help check people into your event.

We’ve enjoyed using EventBrite to sell advanced tickets online and to check viewers in at the door. Of the many things we like about it, you can use their mobile phone app to scan tickets or check people off the ticket buyers list. EventBrite also allows you to reserve comp tickets, if you need to keep a close eye on your seat count.

Is the movie appropriate for kids?

The movie is not yet rated. It does not include explicit language or graphic footage.  However, the subject matter is recommended for high school age and above, but it is ultimately up to a parent.

How much should I charge for admission?

At this time admission cannot be charged by a third party for screenings of the film due to copyright laws.  We suggest that you ask the audience to consider a donation to the Paradise Garden Foundation, since The Garden constantly needs maintenance and is sustained by private donations and grant funds.

Submitting to Press

The press is our friend. If they want to feature local events, win-win! With a few months lead time before the event, we recommend you submit the movie to calendar listings in appropriate local papers from the smallest to the largest. Feel free to send out a press release to local newspapers, magazines, websites, prominent blogs, radio stations, and TV news channels.  These are usually free of charge.  We would be glad to work with you to help you to effectively promote the event, if needed.

Can we get one of the filmmakers or film stars at our screening?

We’d love nothing more than to be there!  However, we have a number of planned events, so we will do our very best to support your event and the film.  Our cast and crew have been very generous with their time to make the film possible and are very busy individuals.  It is entirely up to them, on a case by case basis to decide what their schedules allow.   The Director, Writer, and Producers are based in Atlanta and would be willing to travel to screenings outside the city.  We just ask that travel costs be covered, as well as a small stipend for our time.  If travel isn’t an option, then we might be able to organize a Skype chat with one of the Paradise Garden team.
